Description:
'Semibrilliant' 1902 Eagle, PR64
Rich Orange-Gold Color
1902 $10 PR64 PCGS Secure. The year 1902 was that in which the Mint switched from its former highly contrasted proof gold format -- consisting, in the ideal at any rate, of deeply frosted devices complementing brilliantly mirrored fields -- to one of a low-contrast format that Walter Breen calls "semibrilliant" in his Proof Encyclopedia. The reasons for this changeover are undocumented, although it was a time of worldwide experimentation with varying proof formats. The present near-Gem proof 1902 eagle is one of 113 reported struck. It boasts rich orange-gold surfaces that are fully struck and conform to the new ideal, showing little evidence of contrast on either side. A few tiny field contact marks explain the grade but do not dampen the appeal. Population: 18 in 64, 7 finer (12/12).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 28G9, PCGS# 8842)
