Rare Gem Proof 1904 Eagle1904 $10 PR65 NGC. The Guide Book reports a proof mintage of 108 pieces, but given its high face value in the years prior to the 1933 gold recall, many proof examples of the date were likely spent. NGC (9/05) has certified a total of 29 pieces in all grades, with resubmissions presumably accounting for a portion of the population. This is the first proof 1904 Eagle to appear in a Heritage auction since the NGC PR66 Trompeter specimen was hammered down for $55,200 nearly six years ago. The present razor-sharp Gem displays rich lemon-gold color, and only a single faint hairline is detected, from above star 3 to the chin. A die line within the curl below the ear, located near the top of the neck, serves as a diagnostic for this rare proof issue.(#8844) (Registry values: N69) (NGC ID# 28GB, PCGS# 8844)
