Gleaming 1907 Eagle, PR64 Cameo1907 $10 PR64 Cameo NGC. The mirror-finish proof eagles of 1907 were not only the last proofs for the Liberty design, but also the last proof eagles with reflective fields until 1984, when Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, and West Point struck proof versions of the Los Angeles Olympics eagles. As such, numismatists have accorded them special significance for decades.
Garrett and Guth (2006) describe the presence of a cameo effect on proof 1907 eagles as "typical," though they caution that "the contrast is rarely as strong as in prior years." Though the sharply impressed devices of this lovely example have only light frost, significant contrast is evident on both sides, particularly the reverse. The immensely reflective yellow-gold fields have a few minor contact marks and hairlines that preclude a finer grade, yet have little impact on the overall eye appeal. Census: 15 in 64 Cameo, 7 finer (6/07).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 28GE, PCGS# 88847)
