Description:
NGC 1883 PR 64 Cameo. A very rare proof date with only 61 pieces struck. Of that number estimates of survivors range from a high of 20 to 25 (Akers) to a low of fewer than 20 (Breen). Only 13 proofs have been certified by both services and this coin is tied with 2 others in this grade by NGC with only 1 finer (a PCGS coin). This is a visually stunning proof with very deep fields and sharply contrasting frosted devices. There are a few wispy hairlines in the fields, but these are so minor that we believe they are probably not the reason the coin "only" grades PR 64. There are two streaks of grease (as struck) on the obverse. One is a thin streak emanating from the eye of Liberty and continuing into the field. The other is a dotted streak that runs diagonally across the neck. This is quite unusual on a gold proof as quality control was usually so strict in the production of these special pieces. Nevertheless, this is a beautiful near-gem proof. (NGC ID# 28CL, PCGS# 8478)
