Description

1886 Half Eagle, PR64 Cameo
Sharply Contrasted Coin

1886 $5 PR64 Cameo NGC. Unlike many of the gold and silver coinage issues of 1886, the 1886 half eagles were made in generous proportions, 388,360 business strikes complementing the nominally low proof mintage of 72 coins. For the proof half eagles, despite the inflated population figures, fewer than two dozen different examples survive today. Even fewer survive with the Cameo designation; this PR64 Cameo NGC-certified coin is one three Cameo submissions in this grade, and five are finer (10/13). This piece boasts a razor-sharp proof strike with abundant eye appeal. The top portion of the obverse is yellow-gold, ceding to deeper reddish-orange tinges on the bottom portion. A few minor ticks account for the grade, scarcely worth mentioning. Excellent contrast between the fields and devices appears throughout both sides.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 28CP, PCGS# 88481)
