Exceedingly Rare 1890 Half Eagle, Proof 66 Ultra Cameo1890 $5 PR66 Deep Cameo NGC. In 1890, only 4,240 business strikes were coined, this being the first criteria assigned to this year by gold collectors. However, proofs are also very rare and seldom seen. Of the 88 pieces originally struck, few have remained in this superior state of preservation. This is an intriguing coin. Not only is it a beautiful piece of proof gold, but it also shows a remarkable contrast between the fields and devices on both sides. The fields have a remarkable depth of reflectivity.
Only two factors are noted that can be used as future identifiers, one is a tiny horizontal mark in the upper obverse field below and between stars 7 and 8. This can only be seen if the coin is turned under a light. The other is a small "unfinished" area below the eagle's tail in the field (where the mintmark would appear if there was one). These two items are only mentioned as many numismatists consider it very important to trace the pedigree of such a prominent proof gold coin. (NGC ID# 28CU, PCGS# 98485)
