1865 $2 1/2 PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS....
Rare Proof 1865 Quarter Eagle, PR63 Deep Cameo1865 $2 1/2 PR63 Deep Cameo PCGS. A few tiny contact marks and faint abrasions are visible in the fields of this pleasing proof. Exceptional contrast on both sides with rich orange color create a high degree of aesthetic appeal. Only 25 proof quarter eagles were coined, and probably just half survive today.
The Smithsonian Institution has a Proof 64 Deep Cameo example that was coined in a medal turn alignment, opposite of the standard coin turn. Most auction catalogs do not indicate the die alignment, although this example is coin turn, thus both alignments were used for proofs.
In addition to the Smithsonian coin and this specimen, others known include the Bass, Trompeter, Eliasberg, Garrett, and Norweb specimens.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 287K, PCGS# 97891)
