1866 Quarter Eagle, PR64
Low-Mintage Date, Rarely Offered

1866 $2 1/2 PR64 PCGS. The mintage of 30 pieces suggests how rare this date is as a proof. But it is even rarer than one would imagine; Garrett and Guth suggest some were melted as unsold at year's end. It seems that this date has not been offered at public auction as a non-Cameo since 2000. A cluster of PR64 appearances in 1999 and 2000 suggest the same coin (probably the Trompeter specimen) was offered multiple times until it found a home. This is not the Trompeter coin. One has to wonder why this coin is not in a Cameo holder since the contrast is so profound between the deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices. This piece is identifiable by a patch of granularity next to star 2. The devices on the reverse have a hazy outline.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 7K7T, PCGS# 7892)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
