Description

Superb Proof 1866 Quarter Eagle, The Finest Known

1866 PR 66 PCGS. Only 30 proof 1866 quarter eagles were produced with 11-13 pieces believed extant today in all grades. Of the 16 submissions to both grading services (12/98) this is the finest certified, and it is also undoubtedly the finest known. According to Taglione, of the dates from 1860 through 1915, only the 1861 is rarer than the 1866. This piece has rich reddish tinted orange-gold surfaces with a pronounced cameo contrast on each side. Deeply mirrored and pristine throughout, the only surface imperfections are several tiny lint marks in the left obverse field. A coin of exceptional beauty and considerable numismatic importance. From the Benson Collection of Finest Known Type. (NGC ID# 287L, PCGS# 7892)
