Description

1867 PR 63 PCGS. Proof quarter eagles from 1867 are rarely seen and several of the known survivors are impaired. Only 45 were minted and it is estimated that today no more than 24 pieces are still believed extant. This is a deeply reflective coin that has a fair amount of mint frost on the devices, rendering a mild cameo contrast between the fields and devices. The surfaces have taken on an attractive overlay of reddish patina, and the right half of the reverse has a parabola of deep reddish color, most likely from improper mixture of the gold-copper alloy. There are a few contact marks on each side that can be used as identifiers for pedigree purposes. They also help explain the grade, with the most apparent surface flaws in the left obverse field and another area above the eagle's head on the reverse. Population: 1 in 63, only 4 finer (4/95). (NGC ID# 7K7U, PCGS# 7893)
