Description:
Richly Colored Proof 1869 Quarter Eagle Rarity
1869 $2 1/2 PR 64 Cameo NGC. The proof 1869 quarter eagle survives to the extent of perhaps a dozen coins, a total that represents only half of the 25 pieces originally produced by the Philadelphia Mint. This issue is similar in rarity to the other proof quarter eagles from the late 1860s. A deeply colored, reddish-gold example, both sides exhibit light haziness in the fields that does not, however, seriously impair the reflective qualities. The devices are thickly frosted and expectantly sharp for a proof striking. Pedigree considerations compel us to mention a series of small planchet flaws (as produced) in the obverse field before Liberty's portrait. This coin is equal in technical quality to the PR 64 PCGS example that realized $14,950 as lot 222 in the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers & Merena, 5/00). (NGC ID# 287P, PCGS# 87895)
