Description:
1869 Quarter Eagle, PR63
Only 25 Pieces Struck
1869 $2 1/2 PR63 NGC. Only 25 proof Liberty quarter eagles were struck in 1869, and the surviving population numbers no more than 15-20 pieces in all grades. A few of the known survivors are impaired, and at least two examples are impounded in institutional collections. Collectors prize the rare proofs of the mid-19th century and locating a finer specimen than the coin offered here would be a daunting task.
This attractive Select example is sharply detailed throughout and displays pleasing greenish-gold surfaces. A few minor hairlines and contact marks are evident in the fields, and the reflectivity has become a trifle hazy in some places, but this coin possesses tremendous eye appeal. Census: 1 in 63, 0 finer (9/11).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 287P, PCGS# 7895)
