Description

Rare and Desirable 1870 Proof Quarter Eagle

1870 PR 64 PCGS. Another overlooked rarity in the proof format, the 1870's mintage was a minuscule 35 pieces. Estimates of survivors range from a low of 15 in all grades (Taglione) to a range of 15-20 (Breen). Most of the survivors are well preserved with PR 64 being a fairly typical grade for this issue. The devices on this coin are only moderately frosted but it is enough, given the depth of reflectivity in the fields, to produce a noticeable cameo effect on each side. The surfaces are lightly hairlined (thus the grade) and are covered with an even layer of rose colored patina with a faint blush of lilac on the portrait of Liberty. Population: 3 in 64, only 1 finer (6/96). (NGC ID# 7K7X, PCGS# 7896)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
