Description:
1872 PR63+ Cameo Quarter Eagle
One of Only 30 Proofs Struck
1872 $2 1/2 PR63+ Cameo NGC. As with all proof gold from this era, the mintage was exceptionally limited. In 1872, only 30 proof quarter eagles were produced, and it is estimated that today a mere 12 to 18 pieces are known in all grades. The PR63 and PR63 Cameo grade levels seem to be the highest grades one is likely to encounter. Just a small handful of coins are known finer. This is a lovely reddish-tinted orange-gold example. A few light hairlines are barely detectable and there are a few contact marks, the most obvious located in the left reverse field to the left of the eagle's body. Nicely and noticeably contrasted on each side. Census: 4 in 63 (2 in 63+) Cameo, 6 finer (11/12).(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 287T, PCGS# 87898)
