Very Scarce PR64 Cameo 1881 Quarter Eagle1881 $2 1/2 PR64 Cameo NGC. The 1881 quarter eagle is a rare issue in both proof and business strike format with only 51 proofs and 640 business strikes produced. A reliable estimate of the number of proof survivors is somewhere in the neighborhood of 24-28 pieces. This piece has hazy surfaces on each side, but the deeply reflective mirrors shine brightly on each side with considerable mint frost on the devices that gives the coin a noticeable cameo effect. As one might infer from the grade, this piece is lightly hairlined, no doubt from the "conserving" process done to many of the coins in King Farouk's collection. Population: 1 in 64, 7 finer (11/03).
Ex: Palace Collection (Sotheby's, 2/54); sold to Dr. Howard; a small insert accompanies that is signed by Abe Kosoff attesting to this coin's provenance. (#87907) (Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 2884, PCGS# 87907)
