Description:

Elusive 1881 Quarter Eagle, Gem Proof
Among the Finest at PCGS
1881 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. CAC. The 1881 quarter eagle is very rare both as a circulation strike and as a proof. Only 640 business strikes were produced and 51 proofs. This coin, though not specifically listed as Cameo on the green-label holder, presents the boldest contrast that might be desired. The surfaces exhibit a rich reddish-golden gleam overall, and the fields provide a marvelous depth of reflectivity around the heavily frosted devices. Close examination of the fields shows the desirable orange-peel texture, a result of placing gold planchets in an annealing furnace that was previously used for copper, nickel, or silver coins and therefore at a higher than usual temperature. The surfaces are essentially free of post-striking impairments. The only easily identifiable surface "hallmark" is a copper alloy spot in the upper reverse field below the TE in STATES. Population: 6 in 65, 0 finer (4/12).
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2010), lot 2203, which brought $38,812.50.(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 2884, PCGS# 7907)
