Rarely Encountered PR63 1882 Quarter Eagle1882 $2 1/2 PR63 PCGS. The 1882 Quarter Eagle had a low mintage of only 67 proofs, and it is reliably estimated today that somewhere around 32 coins may still exist. However, quite a few are impaired or show obvious impairments. The actual number of proofs has been somewhat "watered down" over the years as numerous prooflike business strikes have been sold as proofs in the past. There is certainly no doubt about this coin's status, though. The fields are deeply mirrored, as only a proof can be, and the devices display a significant amount of mint frost even though no cameo designation is noted on the insert. Each side displays rich reddish patina and there is a curious swath of haziness across the center of the obverse. Population: 2 in 63, 20 finer (1/03). (NGC ID# 2885, PCGS# 7908)
