Description:
Gem Proof 1885 Quarter Eagle
With CAC Approval, Sole Example
1885 $2 1/2 PR65 PCGS. CAC. The 1885 quarter eagle proof production figure was 87 pieces, but the issue is made more notable to collectors today because of the minuscule circulation-strike mintage, a memorably low 800 coins. David Akers wrote of the 1885 proof quarter eagle in his gold reference works that "Gem quality proofs are very rare, certainly more so than other proofs with comparable mintages, and most proofs that I have seen were marked up or even circulated." Perhaps only half of that mintage of 87 proofs survives today; this Gem is one of three so graded at PCGS, along with two each in Cameo and Deep Cameo, and only non-Cameo and one Deep Cameo are finer, both PR66 (8/12). This is one of our favorite dates among the 1880s quarter eagles, and this piece boasts a needle-sharp strike that has produced a full impression throughout both sides. Rich orange-gold color and full luster over unmarked surfaces make this piece a standout even in this remarkable run of proof quarter eagles. The CAC green label makes this piece the only Gem of the issue with CAC approval.
