Description:
1888 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Cameo
Among the Finest Graded
1888 $2 1/2 PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Auction offerings of the 1888 quarter eagle at the PR65 Cameo grade level are infrequent. To date, the highwater mark is the sale of a PCGS-certified example that brought $27,600 in a 2010 Stack's auction. The proofs of this date complement a low mintage of 16,001 circulation strikes, typical of this decade when the Philadelphia Mint was concentrating on half eagles and eagles at the expense of quarter eagles and double eagles for circulation. The surfaces of this Gem Cameo proof are vivid lemon-yellow, sharply detailed, and deeply mirrored with strong field-device contrast. There is a slight orange-peel effect visible. The only surface disturbance is a shallow planchet flake near the obverse rim between stars 5 and 6 which will serve as a reliable pedigree identifier. Population: 5 in 65 (1 in 65+) Cameo, 0 finer (1/13).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 288B, PCGS# 87914)
