Seldom Offered Proof 1888 Liberty Quarter Eagle, PR65 Cameo PCGS1888 $2 1/2 PR65 Cameo PCGS. This is the first proof 1888 Quarter Eagle that we have handled since 1994, and it is also the first to receive a PR65 Cameo designation at PCGS (10/02). The original mintage of this issue is a mere 97 coins, and survivors, not surprisingly, are rarer than those of the higher mintage 1887 delivery. Perhaps 35-38 coins are extant, the average grade among which is PR63. A superior proof 1888 Two-and-a-Half in all regards, this lovely Gem is possessed of lovely yellow-gold color. The devices are sharply struck throughout and, with a frosty textured finish, they stand in bold contrast to the illimitable depth of reflectivity in the fields. There is not a single distracting blemish, but pedigree concerns compel us to mention a small strike through (as produced) at the obverse denticles after star 10. A coin that would make an important addition to even the most advanced collection. (NGC ID# 288B, PCGS# 87914)
