Description

Breathtaking Proof 1890 Quarter Eagle Rarity With Ultra Cameo Contrast

1890 $2 1/2 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. As a date, the 1890 is immensely popular among gold specialists as only 8,813 pieces were produced. The proof variant of this issue, of which only 93 pieces were originally struck, is a noteworthy rarity with just 40-42 coins believed extant. Some of the examples that have been "lost" may not have even left the Mint, instead being melted as unsold at year's end. A fortunate survivor, the present near-Gem displays extraordinary eye appeal even for the PR64 level of preservation. The cameo contrast is bold and unmistakable: the thickly frosted, orange-gold devices rise powerfully above glassy, coal-black fields. Every feature is fully defined, and there are expectantly few handling marks for the designated grade. This is the first proof 1890 Quarter Eagle with an Ultra Cameo designation that we have offered. (NGC ID# 288D, PCGS# 97916)
