Description:
Pristine Gem Cameo Proof
1891 Quarter Eagle, Repunched Date
1891 $2 1/2 PR65 Cameo NGC. CAC. Despite the late date within the series and the deceptively high recorded mintage of 80 pieces, the proof 1891 quarter eagle is seldom seen at auction. Garrett and Guth estimate that only 30 to 40 examples survive. The 1891 quarter eagle is even elusive as a business strike, which saw only 10,960 impressions during an era of low mintages.
This Gem Cameo proof certified by NGC is one of five submissions in this grade. That service has also seen four in PR66 Cameo and one in PR67 Cameo, along with three PR65 Ultra Cameo, four PR66 Ultra Cameo, two PR66+ Ultra Cameo, one PR66+ Ultra Cameo, and three PR67 Ultra Cameo. (There are almost certainly duplications in those figures.) PCGS has seen an added 12 submissions, the finest one piece in PR66+ Deep Cameo (8/12).
Thick mint frost contrasts with deeply mirrored fields and fully struck devices on this attractive Cameo coin, which boasts the added CAC green label but stands on its own as an extremely attractive example of the issue. There are no mentionable marks on either side. The bases of the 891 show faint repunching, most obviously on the last 1, as on all proofs.

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
