1891 $2 1/2
Appealing 1891 PR 65 Cameo Quarter Eagle1891 PR 65 Cameo NGC. Another heavily frosted example, this with rich yellow-gold coloration and a rather large copper stain in the field between Liberty's hair and star 10. The reverse fields also reveal a few planchet and lint marks when examined under magnification. The 1891, like most quarter eagle issues from this time frame, has the distinction of being scarce both as a business strike and as a proof. Only 10,980 business strikes were produced with perhaps a few hundred or so known today, while 80 proofs were minted with as few as 20 pieces believed extant. (NGC ID# 288E, PCGS# 7917)
