Description

Ultra Cameo Proof 1892 Quarter Eagle

1892 $2 1/2 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. A top quality example of this issue, retaining deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices. Mint records indicate that 105 Proof examples were coined in 1892. Certainly far fewer have survived today, especially in higher grades. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen provided die notes to distinguish between business strikes and Proofs, not that it is necessary on an example like this. The digit 1 in the date nearly touches the center of a dentil. In fact, the top of the dentil is slightly concave, to accommodate the left base of this digit. This example also exhibits a rather prominent die line through the lower portion of the bust, beginning above the right side of the digit 1. Population: 3 in 64, 7 finer (12/04).
