Description:
1893 Quarter Eagle, PR65 Ultra Cameo
106 Minted, Half Survive
Seldom Seen Finer
1893 $2 1/2 PR65 Ultra Cameo NGC. Remnants of repunching remains visible at the lower parts of all four digits, a diagnostic feature of proof 1893 quarter eagles. From 1859 to 1891, just two proof quarter eagle issues, 1860 and 1887, had mintages of 100 coins or more. From 1892 to 1907, no issues had mintages of less than 100 coins. In 1893, for example, the Philadelphia Mint recorded a proof mintage of 106 coins. For most issues in the 1890s, about half the original proof production are thought to survive.
Certification data at NGC and PCGS supports the survival, once resubmissions are considered. The two grading services have certified 73 submissions, including nine PR65 Ultra Cameo coins, and 13 finer Ultra or Deep Cameo pieces (11/11). This amazing specimen, a splendid Gem Ultra Cameo proof, has brilliant yellow surfaces with deeply mirrored fields and highly lustrous devices. Contrast is exceptional and the strike is full. Census: 5 in 65 Ultra Cameo, 11 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 288G, PCGS# 97919)
