1895 Quarter Eagle, PR64 Ultra Cameo1895 $2 1/2 PR64 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC. Only 6,000 circulation-strike 1895-dated quarter eagles were struck, at a time when the Mint was taking action to try to increase the numbers of larger-denomination gold coins in circulation. The proof complement for quarter eagles was a nominal amount, 119 coins. Garrett and Guth guess that perhaps half of that number, 50 to 70 separate coins, survive, despite the far larger population figures. This deeply contrasted near-Gem proof amply demonstrates its qualifications for the Star eye-appeal label from NGC. Abundant gold-devices-on-black-fields contrast appears, the surfaces medium canary-yellow otherwise. Only a few tiny field hairlines keep this fully struck piece from a Gem grade and a much higher price. Census: 5 in 64 Ultra Cameo, 23 finer (2/13).
