Description:
Magnificent PR68 Ultra Cameo 1897 Quarter Eagle
1897 $2 1/2 PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC. Amazingly, we have a second example of this scarcer, late-date proof issue, but even finer in grade. The surfaces on this piece can definitely "face up to a close up." The fields are essentially perfect and we could not locate any hairlines on either side. They also show the distinctive "orange peel" effect that is sometimes seen on proof gold from the 1880s and 1890s. The devices (like the PR66 above) are heavily frosted and show heavy contrast against the unfathomable depth of mirrored reflectivity in the fields. From viewing both of these pieces, it would seem that tiny planchet flakes were common on these coins. Both show them; however, this piece to a lesser extent. In fact, a tiny flake on the lower portion of Liberty's neck is the only flaw we see on this magnificent piece of proof gold. Truly a memorable coin and one that should be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Population: 4 in 68, 0 finer (11/03). (#97923) (Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 288L, PCGS# 97923)
