Description:

1898 Quarter Eagle, PR68 Deep Cameo
Sole Finest at PCGS
1898 $2 1/2 PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS. If there is a "golden age" for classic proof U.S. coinage, surely it spans the years 1896 to 1898, when coins large and small were given great care and attention in creating boldly mirrored specimens with magnificently frosted devices. While other issues in nearby years, perhaps from 1893 to 1901, are also famous for their attractive proofs (it is a boon for collectors that the proof-only 1895 Morgan dollar is from an issue that "comes nice"), the best proofs from the 1896-1898 period seem to have that "something extra" that sets them apart even from the best specimens of other dates.

This recently certified 1898 quarter eagle, graded PR68 Deep Cameo by PCGS, is the sole Deep Cameo coin at that level for the grading service (6/13). A coin such as this must be appreciated at all possible angles and distances: the arm's-length beauty of a coin that is clearly contrasted no matter the angle to the light but most strongly when the mirrors flash around the frosted devices, the close inspection that reveals the subtle "orange-peel" texture of the fields, the razor-sharpness of the devices under thick frost, and the fantastic all-around preservation that only comes into focus under a loupe. While no coin is immune to criticism, only the pettiest and most pessimistic of collectors could find fault with this tiny beauty. Enthusiasts of proof gold coinage, on the other hand, will find plenty to celebrate.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 288M, PCGS# 97924)
