Important Proof 1904 Quarter Eagle1904 $2 1/2 PR63 PCGS. A quick glance at current NGC and PCGS population data will reveal a wide range of quality among extant proof 1904 Quarter Eagles. While some truly spectacular specimens are held in collections, the specialist will also encounter the occasional impaired survivor. The present example falls in the middle of this range, and it is likely to find its way into a proof type set of U.S. gold. Uniform mint brilliance is disturbed by relatively few blemishes for a specimen Two-and-a-Half at the PR63 level of preservation. The otherwise dominant green-gold color warms to orange-gold shades at direct angles. A few areas of disturbance are noted in the obverse field, most notably before the bridge of Liberty's nose and at the back of the neck below the lowermost hair curls. Survivors from the 144-coin delivery in 1904 are among the most plentiful proof Liberty Quarter Eagles in today's market. (NGC ID# 288U, PCGS# 7930)
