Description:
Premium Gem Proof 1916 Lincoln Cent
Attractive Red and Brown Surfaces
1916 1C PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Lincoln cent specialists have long questioned why this date in matte proof, with 600 coins struck, is as elusive as the statistically rarer first-date proofs, 1909 VDB, which saw 420 pieces struck. Another unanswered mystery is why there has been such great difficulty in obtaining matte proof 1916 cents in any of the higher grade ranges. David Lange has suggested that many examples of this date were probably unsold and routinely melted at year's end. Much of this coin's beauty derives from the subtly blended crimson-red and medium brown colors that sweep over both sides, lightening to tan-gold in the upper left obverse field and on the reverse at the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The fine-grained, matte-textured surfaces are wonderfully free of the minor blemishes that often impact grading of vulnerable matte proofs, and all of the the devices boast razor-sharp definition throughout. Census: 12 in 66 Red and Brown, 2 finer (1/13).
