Description:
1881 Morgan Dollar, PR66+ Deep Cameo
Sole Deep Cameo Example at PCGS
1881 $1 PR66+ Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. The mintages of the proof Morgan dollars were remarkably consistent over a span of 27 years from 1878 to 1904 inclusive, ranging from a low of 590 pieces for the 1890 to a high of 1,355 coins for the 1880. (And 22 of the 27 proof dates range in mintage from 590 to less than 1,000 pieces each.) Viewed as dates rather than as varieties (such as the elusive proof 1878 7 Tailfeathers), none of them, including the 1895, is much more or less rare than any other, although demand is paramount in the case of the 1895.
But any proof Morgan dollar in Gem condition or finer is a conditional rarity, as the vast majority fall below that crucial bar. Deep Cameo Morgan dollar proofs are yet more elusive, and the present PR66+ Deep Cameo 1881 Morgan dollar is, in fact, unique in this grade, the sole (and first) Deep Cameo 1881 certified at that service.
As of Sept. 3, 2012, this piece does not yet show up in the PCGS online Population Report, and neither does the PCGS number 97316, both indicating a coin recently graded and the first of its kind at PCGS. The expected silver-devices-on-black-fields appearance is blatant at first glance, the fields profoundly reflective, the devices fully and thickly frosted. The obverse is untoned, while pink and lavender hues appear toward the margins of the reverse. The impeccable strike over virtually contact-free surfaces is a fitting complement to the deep contrast.(Registry values: P2) (PCGS# 97316)
