Description

1888 Morgan Dollar, PR66 Cameo
Tied for Finest Certified at PCGS

1888 $1 PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. A nominal proof mintage of 833 Morgan dollars was accomplished in 1888, with a large delivery of 300 pieces in December, just in time for holiday gift giving. Apparently, quality control began to slip on proof coinage about this time, as many proofs show weak strikes and few are seen with cameo contrast. Dealer H.P. Smith formally complained about the quality of proof coinage, but little improvement was seen the following year.

The present coin is a spectacular Premium Gem, with frosty devices that contrast boldly with the deeply mirrored fields, The strike is certainly better-than-average for the date, but just a touch of softness shows on the hair above the ear. Eye appeal is terrific. Population: 3 in 66 Cameo, 0 finer (3/13).(Registry values: N4719) (PCGS# 87323)
