Description:

1890 Morgan Dollar
Incredible PR69 Ultra Cameo

Tied for Finest Certified of the Entire Type
1890 $1 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC. This is another one of those coins that should simply not exist, an 1890 Morgan dollar certified by NGC in the miraculous grade of PR69 Ultra Cameo. When one stops to think about it, that sort of grade is more typical of what one might find on a modern Kennedy half proof from the 1990s, or a modern American Silver Eagle from the same decade, rather than a Morgan dollar from 100 years previous.

The 1890 proof Morgan dollar has the distinction of being the single lowest-mintage issue in the entire series from 1878 to 1904, making the existence of this top-flight coin even more unusual. Some proof issues have no Ultra Cameos at all certified, in any numeric grade -- and there are many other proof dates that have seen no examples certified in PR69, so the intersection of the two sets that this coin represents is made even more remarkable.

The present piece is not only the sole finest certified of the 1890 issue, it is among the few finest for the entire type. According to the current NGC Census Report, that service has certified precisely five submissions, among all dates, in PR69 Ultra Cameo (Star and non-Star): the present coin; one 1895 (!) in PR69 Ultra Cameo; and three examples of the 1896 in PR69 Ultra Cameo, including one PR69 Ultra Cameo.

The Star designation for exceptional eye appeal is warranted. Not only are the surfaces seemingly completely free of hairlines or singular contact, the strike is far better than normal on the hair over Liberty's ear, something not always seen on this issue. For pedigree purposes, we would mention that area is the sole location on the coin that shows a couple of tiny contact marks, well-hidden in the bold hair tresses. The couple of minuscule planchet flaws on the reverse are as made.

For the bidder who demands the finest possible coins, note that this essentially flawless Morgan dollar is tied with the aforementioned 1896 for the finest certified of the entire type, at both NGC and PCGS (2/13).
