Description:

1895 Dollar, Lightly Circulated and
Attractive PR55 Example

1895 $1 PR55 NGC. Collectors understandably like to purchase the nicest specimens of their targeted coin that they can afford, but the 1895 proof Morgan dollar poses a special challenge, since there are no business strike examples to be had at a lesser price. Only 880 proof 1895 Morgans were struck, although it is likely that most survive today -- at least, it is likely that they survive in about the same proportion as any other Morgan dollar proof issue. The existence of a few circulated 1895 proofs has clouded the issue, but it remains true today that no verifiable business strike has ever been found, despite the reported mintage of 12,000 pieces. While this piece is clearly not a business strike, it would fit nicely in an AU set. It was either circulated briefly or carried as a pocket piece. We tend to think it was the former as there are several larger diagonal marks on the cheek of Liberty. An irregularly shaped planchet flaw is also noted in the left obverse field. Light rose-colored surfaces show significant deep gray patina surrounding the devices on each side.(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 27ZR, PCGS# 7330)
