Description:

1895 Morgan Dollar, PR62
Attractive and Affordable Example of This Key
1895 $1 PR62 PCGS. There is a sufficiently wide grade variance in the 1895 proof Morgan dollars that most collectors can stretch to afford an example in their price range, even if it may be a stretch, and predictably it is the last coin they acquire to complete their sets. The 1895 Morgan dollar was known as a rarity relatively soon after its release, but even so, researchers Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth estimate that 50 to 75 examples survive in circulated grades. Most of the unimpaired proofs are in the PR62 to PR64 grade range, but examples are found in just about any grade desired, from the lowest circulated grades -- PCGS has certified an example in Proof 6 -- to the highest proof grades.
This PR62 example will certainly please some lucky collector. Slight hairlining accounts for the lower grade, but the fields still retain considerable reflectivity. Another point of interest is the mint frost over the devices. This is especially evident on the reverse, but both sides exhibit a slight cameo contrast. At first glance this appears to be a brilliant 1895 dollar, but slight peripheral golden-brown color is noted on each side around the outer margins. The only surface flaw we see is Mint-made, a small, shallow planchet flake out of the field just below the right leg of the M in UNUM. As one would expect from this date, the strike details are fully brought up over each side.
