Proof-Only Gem Cameo 1895 Morgan Dollar1895 $1 PR65 Cameo PCGS. With the circulation strikes seemingly lost forever to the mass meltings of 1918-20, as mandated by the Pittman Act, the Proof 1895 Silver Dollar has become one of the keys to completing the enormously popular Morgan Dollar series. Luckily for today's collector, the majority of the 880 proofs originally produced survive, although in various states of preservation. Gems, of course, form only a small minority of these survivors.
Offered here is a solidly graded example that benefits greatly from the stark contrast between the mirrored fields and the snowy-white central devices. The only appreciable change in the appearance of this high quality specimen over the past 109 years is a bit of golden peripheral color. To be totally accurate, we notice an equally spaced trio of pinpoint marks to the left of Liberty's ear, the only disturbance found that would impede an even higher grade. The coin's dramatic eye appeal and strong collector appeal will no doubt make it a highly anticipated lot. Population: 8 in 65, 0 finer (8/04).
