1896 Morgan Dollar PR68 Deep Cameo
Tied for Finest at PCGS
1896 $1 PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS Secure. The silver proofs of the late 1890s rank among the best produced and most attractive coins of the 19th century. The Mint was capable of exceptional products. Many numismatists share that observation. Even lower grade pieces are attractive, and higher grade proofs are stunning. Mint workmen must have made a special effort to create wonderful coins for the collecting clients.
Just 762 proof Morgan dollars were struck in 1896, originating from two different die pairs. That fact helps to explain the high quality of survivors. The minting process serves to polish the devices of each die. The deepest cameo contrast occurs on new dies, with diminished contrast as more pieces are minted. The use of a second die pair effectively doubles the number of deep cameo and cameo proofs.
This 1896 is a lovely Superb Gem Deep Cameo proof with brilliant silver surfaces and outstanding contrast. Both sides are exquisitely detailed, including the individual hair strands over Liberty's ear. The surfaces are virtually flawless, with deeply mirrored fields around the lustrous, satin silver devices. Toning is minimal with a solitary splash of deep gold on the right (facing) wing. This is a marvelous piece for a world-class type set or a specialized cabinet of Morgan silver dollars. While NGC has certified two finer pieces, this example is tied for the finest that PCGS has graded. Population: 2 in 68 Deep Cameo, 0 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079) (PCGS# 97331)
