Description

1904 Dollar, PR68
One of Three Finest

1904 $1 PR68 NGC. A relatively high number of 1904 proof Morgan dollars (original mintage of 650 pieces) have survived to the present day, evidenced by the more than 600 specimens that have been certified by NGC and PCGS, a number of which are obviously resubmitted or crossover coins. Most of these are in the PR60 to PR65 range; indeed, PR63 is the average grade of certified coins. Even PR66 and PR67 examples can be acquired with relatively little trouble. A mere three coins, however, have been graded PR68, and none finer.
The present offering is one of the three finest. Its luminous surfaces display a splash of electric-blue and lavender toning at the lower-right obverse and the upper-right reverse. The design elements are exquisitely struck and yield little contrast with the fields, as the high parts were struck from lightly polished, rather than frosty, dies. Both sides are free of post-strike blemishes. A simply stunning example of this condition rarity.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2824, PCGS# 7339)
