Description:
1921 Zerbe Proof Morgan, PR66
Tied for Finest at PCGS
1921 $1 Zerbe PR66 PCGS. CAC. Top numismatists disagree on the status of the Zerbe proof coins. Q. David Bowers says flatly that the "Zerbe Proofs have no basis in numismatic fact or history," but many others, including the experts at PCGS, recognize them as certainly something more than an ordinary business strike "struck from dies that were slightly polished," as Bowers puts it. Jaime Hernandez writes on PCGS CoinFacts that "the 1921 Zerbe Special Strike Morgan Dollars were struck on special polished dies but on normal circulation type planchets."

Both the strike and the highly polished effect set this top-grade Zerbe proof apart from prooflike circulation strikes. The surfaces are entirely untoned and certainly appear far more sharply struck and "specially treated" compared to ordinary circulation strikes, even prooflike ones. This Premium Gem example is one of eight such at PCGS, and none are finer (6/13).

The last example we offered in this same grade and service, also with the CAC approval, was in our Chicago Signature (Heritage, 8/2011), lot 7380, a different coin that brought $27,600.
