Very Rare Proof Striking of the 1837 No Stars Dime1837 10C No Stars PR61 NGC. Greer-102. This is truly "a coin that carries its own credentials," as Breen used to say. The fields are deeply, unfathomably mirrored, much more so than a first-strike business strike. As further proof of its status as a special striking, it also has the following diagnostics that are found on all genuine proofs: the diagnostic die scratch on the reverse from the rim above the first T in STATES, and a faint die scratch through the ES and O in STATES OF (both of which are visible with a loupe). Probably somewhere around 30 examples are known of this issue in proof format, and it is seldom offered for sale at public auction. Each side is hairlined but the effects are somewhat lessened by deep speckles of russet toning that are seen over each side. The strike is also razor-sharp on both obverse and reverse. Population: 1 in 61, 15 finer (2/03). (NGC ID# 23BN, PCGS# 4718)
