Description:
1837 No Stars Dime, PR64
Three Finer at PCGS
Ex: Eliasberg
1837 10C No Stars PR64 PCGS. CAC. Large Date (Flat Top 3). Ex: Eliasberg. The 1837 No Stars dimes have always been among our favorite U.S. types, the obverse design showing merely the iconic seated Liberty with date below, the fields unencumbered by any lettering or stars -- a true "cameo" appearance in the artistic sense of the word. The proof dies, as here, show a small die spur of metal at the rim above the first T in STATES, and a die scratch at ES O. This near-Gem proof shows excellent luster remaining under a varied color palette, olive-gold and sky-blue to ice-blue and blue-gray. The estimated proof mintage was 30 coins, although the combined PCGS-NGC population estimates seem quite inflated due to resubmissions. Population: 7 in 64, 3 finer (2/13).
Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 1109.
