Description:
Extremely Rare 1840 No Drapery Dime
PR65 Cameo, Tied for Finest
1840 10C No Drapery PR65 Cameo NGC. This Gem No Drapery proof dime dated 1840 was made nearly two decades before the Mint finally began offering proof coinage to the general public. It cannot be overstressed how rare and elusive such coins are. Walter Breen guessed in his Proof Encyclopedia that at least five are known, including one impaired piece. The Phil Kaufman Collection example was a PR65 Cameo NGC example in our Milwaukee ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2007), lot 1780, which brought $27,600 -- but even though this piece is in an identical grade, it is definitely a different coin. It shows some of the same die characteristics as the Kaufman coin, of course, including some deformation of the right side of the O in ONE and top of the N adjacent. Star 2 is repunched, on all proofs examined. A tiny, stuttering scrape runs from the obverse rim at 6:30 to the bottom of Liberty's rock on this piece, along with a tiny planchet indent just above the O(NE), marks that are absent on the Kaufman coin. The original patina comprises copper and silver hues in the center, with daubs of lavender and aqua near the rims. The eye appeal, strike, and overall preservation are top-notch on this coin, tied for the finest known. Census: 3 in 65 Cameo, 0 finer (9/12).
