The Pittman-Kaufman 1846 Dime, Gem Proof
1846 10C PR65 NGC. The 1846 Seated dime issue is popular and
sought-after even in Mint State, where grade-for-grade it is more
elusive than the 1844 "Little Orphan Annie." The present 1846 dime,
which we last offered as part of the Phil Kaufman Collection, at
one time formed part of the John Jay Pittman complete 10-piece 1846
proof set, half cent through eagle, including the gold pieces.
Graded PR65 by NGC, it is either the finest known or tied for the
finest, depending on whether the second NGC example in the same
grade is a duplicate. In addition to the two Gem proof dimes, NGC
has certified a PR64, three PR63, and a PR62. PCGS has seen two
PR64, five PR63, and two PR62 examples (7/12). It is almost a
certainty that a number of these 16 "grading events" are
duplications. PCGS CoinFacts estimates that only 12 examples
survive in all.
Once Part of a Complete Proof Set
Tied for Finest Certified
Cataloging this piece for the Pittman sale, David Akers wrote:
"Numismatic Gallery (1949). Probably from Ed Frossard's November 4, 1892 sale which contained a complete 1846 Proof set with gold, the only such set known to have been offered at auction in the past. Part of a complete original cased set."
Attractive medium russet, gold, and cobalt-blue toning adorns both sides of this wonderful Gem proof. The impeccably preserved surfaces display mirrorlike fields that accentuate the motifs. The strike is full throughout, including full separation of Liberty's foot and sandal, and crispness on the star centrils and leaf venation. Prominent recutting is visible on the 46 of the date, and a lint mark touches both stars 6 and 7 as well as a denticle. There is a long, raised die line in the field from the bottom of the cap to the drapery. Both the technical quality and eye appeal are outstanding.
