1848 Seated Dime, PR64 NGC1848 10C PR64 NGC. Writing in 1988, Breen states that perhaps eight proof 1848 Dimes are extant. Current NGC and PCGS population data lists 12 coins in grades from PR63 through PR66 (7/01), although we would not be surprised if some of these entries indicate resubmissions of the same coins. Thanks to Breen (1977), we do know that two proofs of this issue are impounded in museum collections, and several others are cleaned to one degree or another. The present near-Gem, on the other hand, displays a pleasingly original appearance with golden tinted centers and dappled russet and cobalt-blue rim toning. Fully brought up in all areas with crisp devices and shimmering fields. As with all known proofs of this date, the 1 in the date is boldly repunched. A pair of small contact marks in the left obverse field between star 2 and Liberty's left (facing) hand are noted for pedigree purposes.
