Description

Deeply Toned Gem Proof Fortin-101
1856 Small Date Dime, Doubled Obverse Die

1856 10C Small Date PR65 PCGS. CAC. Fortin-101. Italic 5 in date. Dramatic die doubling appears on the obverse at Liberty's shield border, lower skirt lines, and LIBERTY, and a die defect appears on her left (facing) breast. The reverse shows a single wispy die line running from the rim to the R in AMERICA. These diagnostics characterize the Fortin-101 but they must be sought with a loupe amid the deep but lovely patina, predominant shades of aqua with glints of jade and gold on each side. This piece is sharply struck, as expected of a proof example. The Large Date is rare in Mint State but all known proofs are of the Small Date type. Perhaps 35 examples survive of this issue, but this piece is among the few finest. Population: 1 in 65, 2 finer (10/12). (NGC ID# 23CA, PCGS# 4745)

Thanks to Heritage I realized a handsome profit for my coin submissions and intend to send most of the remainder of my collection to Heritage Auction Galleries for future auctions.
