Description:
Important 1859 Transitional Dime, Proof 63 PCGS
1859 10C Transitional PR63 PCGS. In 1860, the Mint adopted James Longacre's new cereal wreath reverse for the Seated Dime. Sometime this year, the Coiner's Department at the Philadelphia mint combined one of the new reverse dies with an 1859-dated obverse to produce perhaps a dozen proofs (per Breen 1988, although current NGC and PCGS population data suggests a higher original mintage). These pieces do not display the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on either side. Mint Director Snowden probably distributed these coins to collectors in exchange for pieces with which he could enhance the U.S. Mint Collection. In addition to their rarity, survivors are widely pursued for their novelty.
Well struck and razor sharp, the fields are deeply reflective showing a few scattered hairlines that limit the grade. Bright and completely untoned with superb, highly reflective luster. Few survivors could compare to this example of this important rarity in the Dime series. Population: 3 in 63, 11 finer (12/05).(Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 23CH, PCGS# 4749)
