1840 Seated Dollar, PR64
Moderately Toned First-Year Issue

1840 $1 PR64 NGC. CAC. Ex: Sweet Collection. The Seated Liberty design was introduced on silver dollars in 1840, and an unknown, but undoubtedly small, number of proof examples were issued in sets. David Bowers (1993) estimates the proof mintage was 20-40 pieces.
Light to medium intensity golden-gray patina accented with lavender and cobalt-blue covers both sides of this near-Gem proof, and a solid strike emboldens the design elements, as expected for a proof striking. Close examination with a loupe reveals interspersed die polish lines and fine hairlines in the fields.
Only three times previously have we handled examples finer than the present piece since we began our Permanent Auction Archives in 1993, all PR65 NGC pieces between 2007 and 2011 that averaged a bit over $68,000. The last record of a PR64 NGC coin that we can find was a Bowers and Merena coin (7/2005, lot 1001) that brought $35,650. Census: 7 in 64, 4 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24ZP, PCGS# 6981)
