Description:
Amazing 1840 Seated Dollar, PR64
Triple Struck Reverse
1840 $1 PR64 PCGS. CAC. B-2. The variety with two tiny defects on the right diagonal of the final A. All three lines of the first vertical shield stripe on the reverse extend upward into the horizontal crossbars. Other die details are somewhat obscured by the triple strike.
This boldly detailed Choice proof exhibits fully mirrored fields and lustrous silver devices, and may qualify for a Cameo designation. Both sides have delicate green-gold, violet, blue, and iridescent toning. Minute evidence of doubling on the obverse appears to be strike doubling rather than die repunching. The entire reverse is boldly triple struck, enough so that this piece should constitute a mint error. Some other proofs of this date, as of most or all early proofs, show slight evidence of two press impressions to bring out the detail, but no others that we have examined show this amount of tripled details on the reverse.
We have attempted to determine the provenance of this piece, with no success. The cataloger has a database of 48 auction appearances of 1840 proof Seated Liberty dollars, dating back to the late 1950s. The record is believed quite comprehensive, but this piece is unmatched to any of those auction appearances. It seems to be an entirely new example that is now making its first ever auction appearance. Our extensive record suggests that the often repeated opinion that 10 to 12 proof 1840 silver dollars still exist may be on the low side.
