Description:
Originally Toned, Premium Quality Gem 1845 Seated Dollar, Rare Proof Format
1845 $1 PR66 NGC. Struck from the same reverse die as the 1842, 1846, 1847, 1848, and 1850 proof Seated Dollars in this sale, this coin is unquestionably original with rich lavender-gray toning that deepens in most areas around the peripheral devices. The fields glisten with reflectivity as the coin turns into the light, and vivid crimson, electric-blue, and gold undertones are evident at the same angles. There is not a single ill-defined feature on either side; a small toning spot in the left obverse field at star 6 is useful for pedigree purposes. The 8 and 4 in the date are heavily recut, a diagnostic feature of all known proof 1845 Dollars.
Estimates on the number of extant proof 1845 Seated Dollars include 5-9 coins (Bowers, 1993), 8-10 pieces (Breen, 1977), and 15 examples (NGC and PCGS combined, 1/02). Since the 1845 is equally as elusive as the 1843, and perhaps even the 1841, all three of which are rarer than the 1844 and 1846, it is likely that Bowers' estimate is closest to reality.
Ex: Lester Merkin September 1968 Sale, lot 340, where it realized $725; October 1999 E-Fair Premier Sale (Heritage, 10/99), lot 5319, where it realized $46,000. (NGC ID# 24ZV, PCGS# 6986)
