Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:

Premium Gem Proof 1846 Seated Dollar
Single Finest Certified
Ex: Kaufman
1846 $1 PR66 NGC. This 1846 proof dollar is one of the most important offerings out of the famous Phil Kaufman collection. Not only does it display great eye appeal and technical quality, but it is the finest known example of this date, of which there are a relatively large number compared to other proofs struck in the 1840s.

Two obverse dies were used for the 1846 proof dollar. One is referred to as a "blundered date," which was first entered too low and obliquely, then partially effaced and corrected. Parts of the upper digits 846 show at the bottoms of the primary date. Walter Breen (1988) says it is surprising that this die would have been approved for use on proofs. In the April 1997 write-up of the Louis Eliasberg 1846 proof dollar, David Bowers says the repunched die was apparently retired after a few dozen impressions were made. A second obverse die shows no repunching, and is sometimes referred to as the "perfect date." This coin represents the "blundered date" with the undertype clearly visible at the bottom of the numerals.

NGC and PCGS have certified a total of 23 1846 proof dollars. Coins graded by the former service include this PR66 specimen, seven near-Gems, two PR63's, and one each PR62, PR61,and PR55. PCGS has seen one PR65, three near-Gems, two PR63's, and one each PR61, PR58, and PR55. PCGS has also certified a single PR64 Cameo (3/13). An unknown number of these are likely resubmissions.

The design elements are fully struck on this delightful Premium Gem. The rims are squared off, and the dentilation is bold. Splashes of low-intensity gold, yellow-green, orange, cobalt-blue, and lavender are concentrated in the fields, while the high points of the central devices assume a soft mauve patina. Impeccably preserved surfaces enhance the previously-mentioned attributes. The only pedigree identifier that we can locate is a faint linear mark on the right (left facing) hand. This is a most impressive coin that is sure to capture the attention of Seated Liberty proof aficionados. Census: 1 in 66, 0 finer (3/13).
